What if you properly set up S/MIME, send properly encrypted e-mails to some one who is able to decrypt and read them, but anyway in your own Sent folder you just find the attachment 'smime.p7m'. David thinks that something in Mail.app has failed that.
When you need to protect the privacy of an email message, encrypt it. Encrypting an email message in Outlook means it's converted from readable plain text into scrambled cipher text. Only the recipient who has the private key that matches the public key used to encrypt the message can decipher the message for reading. Any recipient without the corresponding private key, however, sees indecipherable text. A digital signature on an e-mail message helps the recipient verify that you are the authentic sender and not an impostor. To use digital signatures, both the send and recipient must have a mail application that supports the S/MIME standard. Outlook supports the S/MIME standard. Outlook supports two encryption options:
Self-signed certificates in Mac OS X 10.4. You can create your own self-signed certificate using the Keychain Access application's Certificate Assistant. To export your certificate as a PCKS12 file for import into Thunderbird, click 'My Certificates' in the Keychain Access window. Select your self-signed certificate. S/MIME has long been the bastard stepchild of e-mail encryption, largely because it’s more complex to set up and keep up. However, Apple’s Mail programs on Mac OS and iOS both support it, as does Microsoft Outlook on Windows. The title of this article omits the slash from S/MIME because a slash is a special character in URLs and file names. This article describes how to import S/MIME certificates for use in Thunderbird and SeaMonkey. S/MIME certificates are used for digitally signed and encrypted e-mail messages.
